Post-Structuralism: The overall point of this paper is to review the theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault and to show me how they represent a post-structuralist theoretical tradition. In order to make this argument, I would like you to choose a contemporary social institution which yields a lot of power in the US (the legal system, the prison system, the economic system, the educational system, etc). Analyze this institution (in its contemporary form) from the perspective of both Foucault and Bourdieu. What does comparing them reveal about the theories they proposed? How do Foucault and Bourdieu’s theories differ? How are they similar? Which aspects of post-structuralism does each theorist highlight? What are their strengths and weaknesses as post-structuralists (i.e. what tenets of post-structuralism do they succeed in showing and which don’t they)? Which theorist do you think is more appropriate for this analysis and why?
