Introduction
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) continue to
be reported as leading causes of illness and death in the
United States [1–7], yet approximately 25% of the one
million people infected with HIV do not know that they are
HIV-positive [4]. In an effort to increase awareness of HIV
status, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) provided updated guidelines for HIV testing in
September 2006 that called for routine testing in healthcare settings of all adolescents and adults ages 13–64.
Women are reported to be the fastest-growing subgroup
with new HIV diagnoses in the United States [4] and
