Children in Their Social Contexts: A Case of Children and Conflicts in Nigeria

Children are an important societal foundation; a mirror of what that society aspires to be. The increasing conflicts world wide, and in Nigeria in particular mirror a grim image of what the future portends. The reason is that Nigeria has since independence has witnessed brutal inter-group conflicts along ethnic, political and religious lines (Jacomy and Stevens 6). According to experts, the genesis of social conflicts is a result of a segment of the society is denied or deprived of rudimentary material or psychological needs the basis of inter alia, identity (Salawu 76). As the subsequent discussion demonstrates, conflicts serve to bring in sharp focus the needs and importance societies in respecting and esteeming the sanctity of children’s rights.
